Designing Sustainable Eco-Cities 2020

This online camp will be taught June 22- 26 and July 6-10  from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Session 1: June 22-26

Session 2: July 6-10

Do you like to build cities in Minecraft?

In this camp, Minecrafters will investigate the most innovative practices in architecture and urban sustainability. Then, building in MODA’s Minecraft servers, campers will collaborate to create an environmentally-friendly city mindful of future generations’ quality of life.

Over the course of the week, campers will study urban design history, learn about challenges to environmental sustainability, and how different cities evolve. They’ll investigate both current and potential solutions to solving environmental challenges linked to human involvement. Using design thinking, they’ll participate in multiple design challenges that will contribute to developing a sustainable city. Design challenges will cover water management, biodiversity, urban ecologies, landscape architecture, and more. Campers will also design and implement sustainable energy systems with Minecraft’s redstone to provide power and light to their urban environments.

In addition to designing in Minecraft, campers will use computer-aided design programs such as WorldEdit and Tinkercad to design their city and bring it to life. They’ll be challenged to consider a wide variety of variables such as aesthetics, sustainability, construction materials, and user experience as they design.

Campers will:

  • Learn about and build homes, civic, industrial and commercial structures
  • Learn about and discuss “green” concepts, sustainability in urban environments, transportation systems, and built alternative energy infrastructure
  • Develop vocabulary necessary to discuss urban environments, including design vocabulary ('scale', 'rhythm,' 'walkability,' 'density') and social vocabulary ('mobility,' 'sense of place,' 'community values,' 'housing equity' )
  • Refine their understanding of architecture and the built environment and its impact on individuals and communities
  • Learn to use Minecraft as a design tool for exploring and addressing real-world problems
  • Use the design thinking process as a means of addressing the challenges they face in this course
  • Refine the human interaction skills used in design thinking, including empathy, teamwork, brainstorming, prototyping, and testing and refining ideas
  • Improve their coding skills as they learn more refined ways to interact with Minecraft
  • Develop collaborative online skills
  • Create and present projects online

This “green city” will be built on the MODA Minecraft server, meaning that participants will be able to continue to access their work and keep collaborating with one another and with others once their camp ends.

Campers will receive 20 hours of live instruction over the course of our 5-day camp. They’ll also participate in 15-20 hours of structured, self-guided exploration.

Campers will build on the MODA Minecraft server, meaning that participants will be able to continue to access their work and keep collaborating with one another and with others once their camp ends.
