CampMODA at Lovett - Designing Green Architecture to Make a Difference 2020

Want to be an architect? Are you passionate about taking care of the environment? Love playing MInecraft? Bring all these things together at MODA’s Designing Green Architecture to Make a Difference cmap.

Camper architects will be commissioned to build a building on the Lovett campus. They’ll learn how the building will function, study the site, and talk about what makes a building “green.” Then they’ll collaborate to brainstorm ideas for a structure that fulfills needs and respects the environment.  Throughout the week, campers will visit buildings on the Lovett campus to study its architecture works. They’ll also practice the basics of technical drawing as they sketch buildings.

Then, using computer-aided design programs — Minecraft, SketchUp, and Tinkercad — campers will work in teams to design a building and bring it to life. As they build, they’ll be challenged to consider a wide variety of variables such as aesthetics, sustainability, construction materials, and user experience.. They’ll design the building’s exterior appearance, as well as its interior features, and use Minecraft’s Redstone functionality to provide power and light.

Campers will:

Learn principles of architectural design

Learn about “green” buildings and how they are designed and constructed

Develop skills in computer-aided design (CAD) programs

Learn about and practice technical sketching

Learn to use Minecraft as a design tool

Use CAD programs to create simple solids and complex figures

Build empathy through understanding user needs

Develop design and engineering skills

Build skills to improve collaboration in teams

Develop creativity and innovation

Learn how to create design briefs and present them to a client

Develop programming skills
