Puffin Islands 2019

Add to My CalendarJun 09-14, 2019
Last Date to register: Tuesday, January 1st, 2999

This new offering provides participants with the opportunity to land at Eastern Egg Rock during the nesting season to observe puffins, black guillemots, eiders, and three tern species: Common, Arctic, and Roseate Terns. Located just eight miles from Hog Island, Eastern Egg Rock is noted for being the world’s first restored seabird community.

Although most Hog Island campers circle Egg Rock by boat, this is the only session where participants come ashore to be among the birds as they incubate and feed their young. Photo opportunities abound with close-up views of puffins and other seabirds from observation blinds. The seabird experience is enriched with informative talks about seabird migration, courtship, nesting behavior, and conservation.

This session also includes a visit to Matinicus Rock, Maine’s most diverse and remote seabird-nesting island. Notable as North America’s first protected seabird colony, Matinicus Rock is home to hundreds of pairs of puffins, razorbills, and terns. It is also the only breeding location in Maine for Common Murres and Manx Shearwaters.
