Arts and Birding 2023 - Sketching/Painting Track

Add to My CalendarAug 20-25, 2023
Last Date to register: Sunday, August 20th, 2023

Find creative inspiration on Maine’s stunningly beautiful rocky coast, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and rhythms of life on an island. Arts and Birding brings together people at all artistic levels who share an enthusiasm for birds and nature, and invites you to learn, explore and grow in a fun and supportive environment.

This program includes birding adventures, as well as in-depth skill sessions on sketching/painting birds and nature taught by some of country’s best artists and nature sketchers.

We’ll explore the island’s spruce forest, tide pools, and striking vistas, and take a boat trip to Eastern Egg Rock to see Atlantic puffins. You’ll also have longer blocks of time to explore and sketch on your own using the island and its many resources for inspiration.

Daily skill building sessions will cover techniques for drawing and watercolor painting, with a focus on birds, landscapes, and nature journaling. Most participants use portable field sketching supplies like pencil/pen, watercolor, or colored pencil. People of all skill levels are welcome.

For 2021, the camp will be split into two small cohorts. This will allow for more one-on-one instruction and better ways to social distance.  Instructors include Jean Mackay, Sean Murtha, Sherrie York and Barry Van Dusen.  Jean, author of the new book “The Nature Explorer’s Sketchbook,” will direct this session.  Barry recently illustrated the new Birds of Maine book out by Peter Vickery.  All four bird artists are great in the field.  Emphasis will be on field sketching, watercolors and nature study.
