Join seabird biologists and conservationists for a hands-on experience to learn and contribute to bird conservation. Field trips, lectures, and workshops will focus on biology, threats, and the conservation of birds on Maine coastal islands. Visit Monhegan Island and cruise throughout Muscongus Bay in search of unique seabirds and early migrants. Workshops may include painting seabird decoys for colony restoration, habitat management through invasive vegetation removal, marine debris cleanup, and building blinds or chick shelters for researchers to use on the island colonies. Participants will learn from and work alongside preeminent bird biologists and leaders in the conservation field.
During this program you will learn about seabird identification, bird banding, adaptations, migration, and ecology while participating in active restoration work. Note: we will not be landing on any seabird islands in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. This program is scheduled to coincide with the peak of the fall landbird and hawk migration.
