Beginning Middle School Rowing: August 2022

Welcome to Middle School Rowing!
RCRC's Middle School Rowing program is a recreational team for boys and girls in grades 5th-7th to learn how to row in sculling boats.
Through the MSR program younger athletes build rowing skills, learn the importance of physical fitness, and strengthen team skills, while working with teammates in a fun and positive environment.
To get started, sign up for a Beginning Middle School Rowing class. After completing a Beginning class, new rowers join the Middle School Rowing Team and may sign up for successive three week Team Sessions. See note below regarding progression to Team Sessions.
August Beginning Rowing Schedule
-
Tuesday August 9 - Saturday August 27
-
Tuesday, Thursday, 5:00-7:00pm, Saturday 9:30 - 11:30am
- Total # of practices: 9
Team Boats and Safety Policies
Beginning in Fall 2021 all athletes will row in team boats, and follow the RCRC safety policies at the time of their class. Check current class and mask protocols on THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ROWING WEBSITE
Swim Test
All participants must complete a swim test on the first day, to include:
-
Swimming approx. 30 yards
-
Treading water for 2 min.
-
Putting on a PFD while in the water
Athletes who cannot complete the swim test but demonstrate basic swim skills are welcome in the class and are required to wear a PFD (provided by RCRC) when in a boat. If you anticipate that your child will struggle with the swim test please check in with Coach Holly at the beginning of the first practice.
Attendance and Progression to Team Sessions
Attendance at the first two Beginning practices is mandatory.
If your schedule changes after signing up and your athlete can no longer attend the first two days, please let us know as soon as possible and we will try to move your registration to a later class. If no space is available, we will have to cancel your registration.
Attendance at all Beginning practices is highly encouraged as there is a steep learning curve with rowing.
Most new rowers are ready to join Middle School Rowing Team sessions after taking one Beginning Rowing class. Participants who cannot attend all 9 Beginning class practices, or who would simply benefit from additional time at a slower pace, may join another beginning class before moving on to the Team classes.
Team Boats and Safety Policies
Beginning in Fall 2021 all athletes must be able and willing to row in team boats, and follow the RCRC safety policies at the time of their class.
Policies for middle school classes as of January 2022:
- All class participants and RCRC visitors (parents) must wear a mask when inside the RCRC gated area.
- Exceptions:
- With coach's approval, athletes may removed their mask when actively using a rowing machine that is appropriately spaced from other machines
- Athletes rowing in a single person boat may remove their mask once they are on the water.
Each class is limited to 6 participants per coach. Please add to the waitlist to be notified of any openings or added sessions. We do our best to bring in a second coach or schedule an additional session when there is a waitlist but do have limited equipment and a full schedule of classes - sign up early!
After registering, be sure to check your inbox for an automatic confirmation email. This will contain a link to the emergency waiver, and important class information.
